Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop Richard Moth of Arundel and Brighton as the 12th archbishop of Westminster, succeeding Cardinal Vincent Nichols. Archbishop Moth, 67, originally from Zambia and raised in Kent, England, will be installed on February 14, 2026. Known for his episcopal experience and social justice advocacy, he has served as Bishop of the Forces and chair of the Department for Social Justice, vocally opposing discriminatory healthcare policies during the COVID-19 pandemic. He shares the Pope’s passion for horseback riding and has a long-standing commitment to the Church, including roles in education and prison ministry.
Archbishop Moth expressed gratitude for the Pope’s trust and emphasized his dedication to serving the priests and people of Westminster. His background includes extensive pastoral work, canon law studies, and leadership within the Church, including vocations direction and tribunal presidency. He is also an Oblate of Pluscarden Abbey and a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, frequently visiting the Holy Land. Cardinal Nichols praised Moth’s appointment, highlighting his gifts and experience for continuing the Church’s mission in England and Wales.
