Bill Gibbins, Founder of the Modern Jericho Cup, Passes Away

Racing Victoria has announced the passing of Bill Gibbins, the founder of the modern Jericho Cup, recognizing his legendary passion for charity, history, and horse racing. Gibbins revived the World War I Jericho Cup in 2018, personally funding the prizemoney and trainer bonuses for the first four editions of Australia’s longest flat thoroughbred race at 4600 metres. Beyond racing, his philanthropy extended to numerous organizations, including the Riding for the Disabled Association of Australia and Wheelchairs for Kids. He was honored as a Member of the Order of Australia in 2021 for his significant contributions to horse racing and disability support.

Gibbins and his wife Iolanda were life members of the Warrnambool Racing Club, with Bill inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2024. Racing Victoria and Country Racing Victoria leaders praised his dedication, noting his commitment to Australian heritage and servicemen and women through the Jericho Cup. His legacy endures through the race and series he passionately established, reflecting his deep love for the community and the sport.
