The Berks County 4-H Hippology Team won the Pennsylvania 4-H Hippology Contest in May, earning the opportunity to compete at two national events: the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio, and the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup in Louisville, Kentucky. The team, consisting of Angelina Shumaker, Kamryn Witman, Megan Salamone, and Natalee Fryer and coached by Colleen Witman, prepared extensively for these competitions, which test knowledge and skills in horse study through written exams, judging, identification stations, and team problem-solving.
At the Quarter Horse Congress in October, the team placed 2nd in the judging phase, with Shumaker ranking 10th individually. In November at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup, they placed 8th in judging and 10th in the station phase. The Pennsylvania 4-H program, administered by Penn State Extension, supports youth development across the state, offering leadership and life skills education to over six million young people nationwide.
