Berks County 4-H Hippology Team Competes Successfully at National Contests

The Berks County 4-H Hippology Team, composed of Angelina Shumaker, Kamryn Witman, Megan Salamone, and Natalee Fryer, recently competed at two prestigious national events: the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, OH, and the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup in Louisville, KY. Their participation was earned by winning the Pennsylvania 4-H Hippology Contest in May 2025. Coached by 4-H volunteer Colleen Witman, the team demonstrated strong skills in various contest phases, placing 2nd in judging at the Quarter Horse Congress and achieving top individual and team rankings at both competitions.

Hippology contests test participants’ knowledge of horses through written exams, horse judging, identification stations, and team problem-solving. The Berks County team’s success highlights their dedication and the educational opportunities provided by Penn State Extension’s 4-H program, which supports youth development across Pennsylvania through leadership and life skills training. More information about local 4-H programs can be found on the Penn State Extension website.
