Bendigo Jockey Club Unveils $1 Million Turf Upgrade Ahead of Racing Return

Racing is set to return to Bendigo with a newly renovated turf surface, marking the first major track upgrade in 27 years. The Bendigo Jockey Club invested $1 million in replacing the turf, removing the old root system and laying down around 66,000 square meters of new grass using maxi-rolls. This method allowed for quicker recovery compared to traditional seeding. The club carefully selected a kikuyu grass base, known for its softness and strong root system, which will be overseeded with rye grass to maintain color and quality through winter.

Bendigo Jockey Club CEO Paul Scullie emphasized the extensive research and expert consultation involved in the project to ensure a fair and high-quality racing surface. The track will be in prime condition for the upcoming Marong Cup meeting, with further improvements planned ahead of the Golden Mile meeting next month. The new turf approach aligns with practices at other major tracks like Moonee Valley and Flemington, aiming to provide a superior experience for both horses and racegoers.
