Barlow Independent Fair Showcases Youth Livestock Projects and Community Spirit

The 2025 Barlow Independent Fair in Washington County, Ohio, provided a welcoming platform for youth like Francesca Sanders, a 17-year-old homeschool senior from West Virginia with a ranching background, to engage in livestock projects and Junior Fair competitions for the first time. The fair, which has a 154-year history as Ohio’s oldest independent fair, supports 4-H, FFA, and unaffiliated youth in showcasing agricultural skills, fostering community spirit, and encouraging lifelong skill development. Families like the Sanders and Thompsons praised the fair’s supportive environment, noting its positive impact on youth confidence and social engagement.

With over 200 animals exhibited and a livestock sale generating nearly $400,000, the fair remains a significant event for local agriculture and youth development. Participants like Bailey Yoho, a 14-year-old FFA member, return annually for the opportunity to work with animals such as goats and hogs, highlighting the fair’s role in nurturing passion and career readiness in agriculture. The event also features community traditions like the Oldtimer Showmanship competition, where longtime participants continue to contribute, underscoring the fair’s strong hometown feel and multigenerational appeal.
