Ballaghmor Class to Retire with Ceremony at Defender Burghley Horse Trials

Ballaghmor Class, the remarkable grey horse affectionately known as “Thomas,” who carried Oliver Townend to four five-star eventing victories—including two at Burghley—will be officially retired in a Main arena ceremony at the Defender Burghley Horse Trials on September 6. The 19-year-old Irish-bred horse, who achieved 11 top-five finishes at CCI5* events and helped Townend secure multiple prestigious wins and an Olympic team gold for Britain, was announced retired earlier this year.

Oliver Townend expressed pride in retiring Thomas while still fit and well, highlighting the horse’s special connection to Burghley, where he won his first CCI5* event at age 10 and returned six years later to win again after the Tokyo Olympics. The retirement ceremony will celebrate Thomas’s extraordinary career and allow fans and owners to honor his legacy at a venue that holds great significance for both horse and rider.
