Dr. Anjani Ganase highlights the challenges and safety concerns at Tobago’s Buccoo Bay and other popular beaches within the Buccoo Reef Marine Park, a protected area known for its rich biodiversity and ecological importance. Despite legal protections, the coexistence of multiple activities—such as swimming, boating, jet skiing, horseback riding, and fishing—creates conflicts that endanger visitors and the environment. Unsafe practices like speeding boats near swimmers, lack of regulated no-wake zones, and horses entering bathing waters have led to accidents, near misses, and pollution, undermining the safety and enjoyment of beachgoers.
Ganase emphasizes the urgent need for coordinated management and spatial planning to separate conflicting activities, enforce safety regulations, and protect sensitive ecosystems. She advocates for clear operational rules, including vessel licensing, speed limits, and designated zones, alongside community involvement and sustainable tourism practices. Ensuring visitor safety and environmental stewardship is essential for Tobago’s tourism success, requiring investment in effective management and a duty of care that balances human use with conservation goals.
