The future of horse racing in British Columbia is uncertain after the provincial government abruptly announced it would cut slot machine revenue funding from Vancouver’s Hastings Racecourse, the province’s last active horse racing track. This decision was revealed during a video meeting with horse racing representatives and followed by an official letter from Nina Krieger, the minister of public safety and solicitor general.
Gary Johnson of Thoroughbred Racing B.C. expressed shock at the sudden announcement, noting that the industry had proactively submitted a three-year budget eight months prior and had responded to requests for alternative proposals. The unexpected funding cut raises serious concerns about the viability of horse racing in the region.
