Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan Strengthen Cooperation in Karabakh and Akhal-Teke Horse Breeding and Cultural Heritage

The Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Turkmenistan, Gismat Gozalov, met with Pygy Bayramdurdyyev, Rector of the International Akhal-Teke Horse Breeding Academy, to discuss the shared cultural and historical significance of the Karabakh and Akhal-Teke horse breeds. These rare horses symbolize the tangible heritage and national traditions of both countries, reflecting their common Turkic roots. The meeting highlighted ongoing cooperation under the Joint Intergovernmental Commission, focusing on horse breeding, equestrian sports, traditional games, and preservation of the breeds’ gene pools.

They also explored prospects for scientific and educational collaboration, including training programs for youth and specialists. Plans were confirmed for a 2026 performance by Turkmenistan’s “Galkynysh” horse group in Azerbaijan, featuring both horse breeds to strengthen bilateral ties. Both sides emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation through a formal memorandum and joint initiatives on international platforms like UNESCO to promote and protect their equestrian heritage.
