Australian Olympian Heath Ryan Provisionally Suspended Over Video of Horse Whipping

Australian Olympian Heath Ryan has been provisionally suspended by the Fédération Equestre International (FEI) and Equestrian Australia following the emergence of a video showing him whipping a horse repeatedly during a training session. The video, which depicts Ryan striking the stallion more than 40 times, prompted an investigation led by the FEI in cooperation with Equestrian Australia’s Integrity Unit. Both organizations expressed deep concern over the treatment of the horse, emphasizing their commitment to horse welfare and the importance of a thorough and fair investigative process.

Ryan defended his actions, explaining that the horse, a 6-year-old stallion named Nico, was dangerous and had previously injured a friend, leading him to use the whipping as a last resort to manage the animal and ultimately save its life. He stated the video was two years old and posted by a disgruntled former employee. Ryan claimed that after the incident, the horse improved and was later placed in a caring and competitive environment. Despite his defense, the FEI and Equestrian Australia continue their investigation, with the FEI withholding further comments to maintain the integrity of the process.
