Gin Szagola, a 25-year-old originally from Pennsylvania, completed an extraordinary eight-month, 4,400-kilometre horseback journey across Australia with her horse Fable, a wild brumby she trained herself. Starting in Tathra, New South Wales, and ending at Forrest Beach in Busselton, Western Australia, Szagola traveled alone without a support crew, carefully pacing the trip to prioritize Fable’s wellbeing. The journey took them through multiple states and the challenging Nullarbor Plain, with Szagola camping beside her horse each night and taking regular breaks to ensure Fable’s comfort.
Fable was rescued from the wild by the Victorian Brumby Association and required months of training before the journey began. The strong bond between Szagola and Fable was evident from the start, and their successful crossing was celebrated by supporters, including the association’s president. Looking ahead, Szagola is considering a similar horseback adventure across New Zealand, aiming to complete long rides on three different continents with three wild horses.
