Australia to Host 109 Million-Dollar Thoroughbred Races in 2026, Showcasing Global Racing Strength

Australia’s thoroughbred racing industry continues to demonstrate its global prominence, as highlighted in the 2026 Aushorse Investors Guide. The country will host 109 races with prize money exceeding $1 million in 2026, including major events like The Everest ($20 million) and the Melbourne Cup ($10 million). With an average prize of $54,296 across over 19,000 races annually, the industry boasts strong participation, including more than 140,000 registered racehorse owners—a 35% increase over the past decade, particularly among younger owners. Australia also ranks highly on the international stage, placing 30 Group 1 races in the global top 100 in 2024, and maintains valuable trading partnerships, notably with Hong Kong.

The Guide underscores Australia’s competitive advantage in offering lower yearling sale prices compared to the US and Europe, while still providing access to future stakes and Group 1 winners. This affordability, combined with high residual value driven by major buyers like Yulong and Coolmore, has led to significant appreciation in bloodstock values—stakes-winning fillies and mares have increased by 91% in price over the past decade, and Group 1 and 2 winners have more than doubled in value. Overall, the industry’s growth, resilience, and international success continue to attract domestic and global investment.
