Athens-Clarke County Fire Department Unveils New $800,000 Heavy-Duty Rescue Unit with Traditional Push-In Ceremony

The Athens-Clarke County Fire Department recently introduced a new $800,000 heavy-duty rescue unit, Rescue 4, at Fire Station 4 through a traditional “push-in” ceremony that symbolizes teamwork and dedication in firefighting. Custom-built by E-One on a heavy-duty Typhoon chassis, this advanced vehicle is designed for complex rescue operations such as vehicle extrications and building collapses. It replaces two older units and enhances the department’s capability to respond to high-risk emergencies, reflecting the community’s growth and increasing rescue demands.

Fire Chief Nate Moss emphasized that the new apparatus represents a commitment to providing the best tools and training for emergency response, while City officials, including Mayor Kelly Girtz, acknowledged the firefighters’ bravery and service. Station 4’s strategic location near downtown and major routes allows for rapid deployment countywide. Additionally, many firefighters at Station 4 participate in the regional Urban Search & Rescue Program, collaborating with Georgia Emergency Management to further strengthen rescue efforts in the area.
