Assam Conservationists Rescue Injured Foal, Highlighting Threats to Rare Feral Horses

Wildlife conservationists in Assam’s Lakhimpur district rescued an injured foal, bringing attention to the region’s little-known population of feral horses. These horses, primarily found in and around Dibru–Saikhowa National Park, are believed to be descendants of British and American cavalry horses abandoned during World War II or local cart horses stranded after the 1950 earthquake and floods. Despite their unique history and adaptation to the wild, these feral horses lack legal protection under India’s Wildlife Protection Act, facing threats from floods, habitat loss, and human interference.

The feral horse population, estimated informally at 150–200 animals, is confined mainly to Dibru–Saikhowa National Park, with occasional sightings elsewhere in Assam. Conservationists are calling for legal recognition, habitat management, and genetic studies to ensure their survival, emphasizing the horses’ historical significance and the urgent need for government action. The recent rescue highlights ongoing risks to both feral and domestic horses from environmental and human factors, underscoring the importance of dedicated conservation efforts in Assam.
