Asinara Island’s Wildlife Revival: Protecting Rare Native Species and Managing Feral Populations

The island of Asinara, off the coast of Sardinia, is undergoing a careful ecological restoration to protect its rare native species and unique habitats. Historically spared from development due to its use as a lazaretto, penal colony, and maximum security prison until 1999, Asinara has preserved distinctive fauna such as the iconic white donkeys and feral Asinara horses, descendants of Anglo-Arab Sardinian breeds. With the horse population exceeding sustainable levels, the park authority has begun rehoming younger horses to reduce ecological pressure. Concurrently, efforts are underway to remove invasive feral species like wild boar hybrids, goats, and feral cats, which threaten native flora and fauna through habitat degradation and predation.

These removal programs involve health checks, microchipping, and relocation of animals to compliant farms, ensuring animal welfare while restoring ecological balance. The park has also employed modern monitoring techniques, including drone-assisted censuses, to manage populations effectively. By controlling invasive species and managing the horse population, Asinara aims to safeguard its endemic biodiversity and maintain the island’s unique microhabitats for future generations.
