Armidale Stud Welcomes Dual Group-Winning Colt Bodyguard to Tasmanian Breeding Scene

Armidale Stud has successfully acquired the dual juvenile Group-winning colt Bodyguard (I Am Invincible), who will stand for an introductory fee of $8,800 in 2025. Bodyguard, a $1.6 million yearling purchase, showcased his talent with a two-length victory in the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes and a win in the Blue Diamond Prelude. Managing Director David Whishaw expressed excitement about Bodyguard’s potential, highlighting his impressive pedigree, physical attributes, and racing ability as key factors in their decision.

Whishaw emphasized the importance of Bodyguard’s early speed and precocity, which align with current market demands. He believes Bodyguard’s pedigree—being by a champion sire and out of a Golden Slipper winner—will resonate with breeders. The hope is that Bodyguard will not only enhance Armidale’s breeding program but also stimulate the struggling Tasmanian breeding industry, which has seen a significant decline in broodmare numbers.

With the local breeding industry facing challenges, including a 40% drop in mare numbers, Whishaw is optimistic that Bodyguard’s introduction will restore confidence among breeders. He aims for Bodyguard to inspire investments in new mares, ultimately benefiting the local economy and sales. Bodyguard will join existing stallions Needs Further and Alpine Eagle at Armidale, both of whom have established themselves as valuable assets to the Tasmanian breeding landscape.
