Arkansas 4-H State Horse Show Highlights Youth Horsemanship and Life Skills Development

The Arkansas 4-H State Horse Show, held July 15-17 at the White County Fairgrounds, showcased over 70 youth participants from 21 counties competing in various equestrian events such as barrel racing, goat tying, pole bending, and keyhole racing. Among the competitors was 17-year-old Mabry Davis from Ashley County, who won first place in senior barrel racing. The event serves as the culmination of year-round 4-H horse clinics, workshops, and qualifying shows, providing young riders opportunities to develop horsemanship skills, build confidence, and form lasting friendships. The program also includes educational contests like horse quiz bowls and hippology to deepen members’ knowledge of horse care and management.

Mark Russell, extension equine professor, emphasized that the 4-H horse program offers more than riding skills—it helps youth find a sense of belonging, develop life skills such as decision-making and public speaking, and prepare for future endeavors. Participants like 11-year-old Payden Wright highlighted the importance of trust and bonding with their horses, which helps them overcome fears and improve performance. Winners from the state show may advance to regional competitions, and the program continues to positively impact members by fostering personal growth, statewide connections, and a lifelong passion for horses.
