Annabella Were, a 16-year-old rider from Ōtorohanga Pony Club, is preparing to compete at the Matamata Equestrian Group Randlab National One Day Champs, showcasing her skills in eventing disciplines: dressage, show jumping, and cross-country. Riding her talented horse Riley, Were has demonstrated strong performances, recently securing top placings at the North Island and New Zealand Pony Club Championships, including winning the Equitation Cup and helping her Waikato team achieve notable rankings. Their partnership is marked by Riley’s adaptability and enthusiasm, especially in cross-country, and Were’s dedication to training and care, supported by her coaches and family.

Were’s commitment to equestrian sport is evident in her consistent practice and resilience through challenges, qualities praised by her mother, Kio Kio Primary School principal Pip Were. Looking ahead, Annabella aspires to elevate her career further, with the ultimate dream of representing New Zealand at the Olympics, driven by her passion and the strong bond she shares with Riley.
