In a major rescue operation led by the RSPCA in November 2023, over 400 animals from 19 species—including around 70 horses and donkeys—were found living in appalling conditions on a farm. The animals suffered from severe neglect, including overgrown hooves, untreated infections, and malnutrition. More than 100 charity workers from eight organizations, including The Donkey Sanctuary, worked together to provide urgent veterinary care, with some animals, such as a severely underweight female donkey, humanely euthanized on site. Twelve donkeys with chronic health issues will remain at The Donkey Sanctuary for lifelong care, while others are being rehomed.
The farm owner was sentenced to twelve months in prison and given a lifetime animal ban after pleading guilty to 25 offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. The rescue highlighted the critical need for early intervention and support for animal owners struggling to provide proper care. The Donkey Sanctuary and RSPCA continue to collaborate to ensure the rescued animals receive expert care and find loving homes, emphasizing the importance of compassion and responsibility in animal welfare.
