Animal Rescue League of Iowa Sets Adoption Record and Plans Major Expansions for 2026 Centennial

In 2025, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) set a new record with 9,248 adoptions, surpassing the previous record by 600, partly due to large-scale rescues that accounted for over 900 adoptions, including animals from outside central Iowa. The organization also expanded its horse farm by acquiring a new property near its main location, providing space for animals other than dogs and cats. Looking ahead to 2026, ARL plans to convert this ranch into a triage center for large rescues, build an indoor dog park, and open clinics to offer affordable veterinary care, emphasizing the ongoing need for spaying and neutering in the community.

As ARL approaches its 100th anniversary in 2026, CEO Tom Colvin reflects on the enduring challenges the organization was founded to address and credits the community’s strong support—through adopting, volunteering, and fostering—as key to their success. This support, he says, makes the future look very promising for animals in central Iowa.
