Animal Activists Protest as Private Prosecution Targets Live Horse Exporter in Winnipeg

Protesters and animal rights advocates gathered at the Winnipeg Law Courts to demand accountability after Animal Justice initiated a private prosecution against Carolyle Farms, a live horse exporter, over a December 2022 shipment in which three horses allegedly collapsed during a flight to Japan. The plane, rerouted due to heavy snowfall, reportedly kept the horses without food, water, or rest for 32 hours—exceeding the legal limit of 28 hours. Activists argue that air transport of horses is inherently inhumane and are calling for an end to live horse exports across Canada.

Animal Justice charged Carolyle Farms in February 2024, highlighting that horses shipped to Japan are fattened and slaughtered for consumption. Witnesses testified that regulatory changes in 2020 reduced oversight, allowing transporters to avoid updating contingency plans with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. The farm owner pleaded not guilty, while activists continue to document ongoing shipments and push for stronger protections and a ban on live horse exports.
