American Owners Ulwelling Win Canada’s King’s Plate Stakes with Mansetti

The King’s Plate Stakes, Canada’s premier race for 3-year-olds foaled in Canada, was won on August 16 by Mansetti, a colt owned by American father-and-son duo Bill and Al Ulwelling. Trained by Kevin Attard and ridden by jockey Pietro Moran, Mansetti secured victory in the historic $725,444 race at Woodbine, finishing 2 1/2 lengths ahead with a time of 2:03.68 on the synthetic Tapeta surface. Despite doubts about Mansetti’s stamina for the 1 1/4-mile distance, his relaxed and strategic ride helped him overcome the field, including favored contenders like Notorious Gangster and Scorching.

Mansetti, bred in Ontario by Jungle Racing and sired by Collected, was purchased by the Ulwellings for $40,000 at the 2024 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Spring Sale. The win marked the Ulwellings’ first King’s Plate victory and highlighted trainer Attard’s continued success, having won three Plates since 2022. The Canadian Triple Crown series will continue with the Prince of Wales Stakes on September 9 at Fort Erie, followed by the Breeders’ Stakes on September 28 at Woodbine.
