American Affair delivered a strong performance to win the King Charles III Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot on June 17, narrowly holding off Frost At Dawn. Trained by Jim Goldie, this victory marked his first Group 1 and Royal Ascot win since beginning training in 1995. Jockey Paul Mulrennan, who last won at Royal Ascot in 2010, praised the significance of the win, highlighting the competitive field and the prestige of the event. American Affair, a 5-year-old gelding, has steadily improved through the ranks, now boasting eight wins in 22 starts.
The win also secured American Affair an automatic, fees-paid entry into the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) at Del Mar in November, part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series. Frost At Dawn, who led late in the race, finished second, with Regional third and last year’s Turf Sprint winner Starlust finishing fourth. Goldie emphasized the horse’s growing speed and maturity, while Mulrennan noted adjustments made for the race, including adding a hood, which contributed to their success.
