Alishba Mohsin, a 21-year-old from Lahore, has made history as the first Pakistani woman to ride in and win a professional horse race. Introduced to horse racing at a young age, she began riding seriously at 17 with the support of mentors and family. Despite initial setbacks, including being replaced at the last minute in her first significant race, she secured her maiden victory in December 2021 while still a schoolgirl. Alishba balances her passion for racing with her university studies and has trained abroad in the UK to hone her skills further.
Horse racing in Pakistan remains a challenging and risky profession, with limited financial rewards and minimal support for jockeys, especially women. Alishba has faced injury and skepticism but remains undeterred, aiming for bigger races like the prestigious ‘1,000 Guineas of Pakistan.’ She continues to work hard, hoping to gain the trust of trainers and owners to ride prized horses, while breaking barriers in a male-dominated sport and inspiring future generations.
