Age is Just a Number: The Inspiring Journey of 85-Year-Old Equestrian Janet Whitmer

Janet Whitmer, an 85-year-old resident of Beaverton, has dedicated her life to horses, showcasing her passion through various equestrian activities, including racing Thoroughbreds and barrel racing with Quarter Horses. Her journey began at a young age, riding her grandfather’s workhorses, and she later secured her first horse, Goldie, through a clever contract with her father. Despite financial challenges, she found innovative ways to pursue her love for horses, even riding up to 18 miles to events.

Throughout her life, Whitmer has remained resilient, continuing to compete and train horses even after becoming a single parent. Her daughter, Angela, has followed in her footsteps, actively participating in barrel racing across the Midwest, while Whitmer takes pride in her family’s equestrian legacy, including her granddaughter Jessica’s involvement in training horses.

Currently, Whitmer is preparing to compete in the senior division with her Quarter Horse, Fester, while also helping on a local farm. Her enduring passion for horses and commitment to staying active exemplify her belief that age is just a number.
