A 9-year-old gelding named Took Charge died after sustaining an injury during a race at Los Alamitos, marking the track’s second horse fatality in the past week and fourth this year, according to the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB). Took Charge finished last in the race and was taken off the track by ambulance but died the same day. The CHRB categorized the death as a racing fatality under “non-musculoskeletal and other,” with no further details provided.
Took Charge had a career of 34 races, mostly at Los Alamitos and Santa Anita Park, with six wins. His death adds to a troubling trend at Los Alamitos, which has seen 19 racing and training horse deaths in 2025 alone, including the recent passing of another gelding, Exhalting, who died weeks after a racing injury at the same track.
