Youth from the Country Style 4-H program have partnered with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office to inspire inmates at the El Paso County Jail through an art-sharing initiative created for Agriculture Awareness Month. The program involves 4-H members providing original agricultural-themed artwork to inmates, who then create murals in gratitude. Over 250 inmates participated, using the project to engage in creative expression, mental health awareness, and agricultural education, while practicing leadership and research skills. Workshops facilitated by a therapist and an agricultural business owner incorporated Cognitive Behavioral Therapy concepts to promote coping strategies and self-reflection.
This collaboration aims to bridge communities by fostering rehabilitation, positive behavior, and teamwork within the jail. Sheriff Joseph Roybal highlighted how the program supports mental health, workforce development, and meaningful connections between youth and incarcerated individuals. The initiative culminates with 4-H youth presenting their projects to law enforcement leadership, followed by a public vote on the inmate-created murals shared on social media, celebrating creativity and agricultural education behind bars.
