4-H in Interior Alaska: Youth Development Beyond Livestock and Horses

4-H in Interior Alaska is a youth development program run by the University of Alaska Fairbanks, offering clubs across nine districts for youth in grades 4-12 and younger children through Cloverbud clubs. While often linked to livestock and horses, 4-H provides diverse opportunities including public speaking, leadership, STEM, robotics, baking, gardening, and civic engagement. The program’s theme, “Beyond Ready,” emphasizes preparing youth not just to be ready but to excel in their futures, whether pursuing college, trade school, or entering the workforce.

Local 4-H clubs are supported by community volunteers who help facilitate a variety of projects tailored to members’ interests. Volunteers are encouraged to join or start new clubs, requiring at least two trained adults per club. The program also offers valuable skills development and college scholarships. For more information or to get involved, interested individuals can contact the Tanana District 4-H coordinator at UAF or visit their website.
