The 2025 Northeast Regional 4-H Horse Quiz Bowl and Hippology Contest took place on February 2 in Derby, with 30 4-H’ers competing in various equine-related challenges. The event was open to 4-H members from Caledonia, Essex, Lamoille, and Orleans Counties and was sponsored by University of Vermont Extension 4-H in those areas. Participants were tested on equine knowledge through written exams and rotations through stations covering topics like horse breeds, anatomy, tack, saddle types, and more.
Rosette ribbons were awarded to the top six scorers in each age group for both the hippology contest and quiz bowl competition. The event attracted participants from ages 8 to 18, with winners like Alina Phillips and Quinn Charest in the 8-9 age group, Eva Lamothe and Adriana Holbrook in the 10-11 age group, and Natalie Taylor and Averill Scott in the 12-13 age group. The quiz bowl competition consisted of three rounds of 20 questions each, with top scorers like Kassie Koehler and Molly Larrabee in the 14-18 age group.
Parents and volunteers helped organize the event, with UVM Extension 4-H Educators Lindy Birch and Holly Ferris leading the way. The event also included participation from 4-H Cloverbuds, ages 5 to 7, who took part in the contests for fun and learning. Overall, the event showcased the dedication and knowledge of young equestrians in the region.
