2024 Beef and Equine Blasts at Iowa State University: Empowering Iowa Youth in Animal Science and Husbandry

The 2024 Beef and Equine Blasts at Iowa State University provided 50 Iowa youth in grades 7-12 with hands-on experiences and in-depth knowledge about animal science, potential career paths, and real-world topics affecting the industries. The Beef Blast focused on feedlot fundamentals, covering nutrition, selection, welfare, and marketing of beef cattle. Participants engaged in sessions on beef nutrition, evaluated cattle, learned about meat quality, and participated in quality assurance stations.

The Equine Blast event, Horse Ownership 101, covered nutrition, welfare, and tack for horses. Participants learned about feeding practices, horse care, genetics of coat color, and careers in the horse industry. They also toured Iowa State University’s horse barn, heard from experts in the field, and gained insights into evaluating stallions, equine welfare, and basic horse care.

Both events aimed to provide young participants with practical knowledge and skills in animal science and husbandry, fostering a deeper understanding of the industries. Participants reported enjoying the educational sessions, hands-on experiences, and learning about potential career opportunities in the field.
