15-Year-Old Boy Rescued After Getting Stuck in Mud in Suffolk County Woods

A 15-year-old boy named Benjamin Moore was rescued after getting lost and stuck in mud in the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge in Suffolk County on Sunday night. After calling 911 around 7:27 p.m., Moore explained he had wandered off the trail and accidentally stepped into a muddy offshoot of the Carmans River, where he became trapped. While remaining on the phone with a dispatcher, he used his cellphone flashlight to signal rescuers.

Suffolk County Police Aviation Section located Moore from the air as he waved his phone light, guiding ground officers to his position. Patrol officers and Emergency Service Section members reached him about an hour later, pulling him out of the mud around 8:25 p.m. Additional support came from the Canine Section, Marine Bureau, and local fire departments. Moore was then transported by ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital for evaluation.
